Description: Considering the fall in traditional paper and phone travel survey participation, GPS-based surveys are necessary for accurate transportation modeling and planning. In this report, researchers examined the GPS survey data for travel modes and trip purposes in the New York City Tri-State area to provide insights into flexible tools that can support continuously updated GPS data.

Objectives: The objective of this report was to develop a prototype as a tool for managing and analyzing GPS travel data. The research reviewed previous travel surveying efforts that used GPS data and describes the advantages of a Web-based tool as opposed to a traditional, physical system.

Findings: The research culminated in the creation of the Web-based GIS prototype, which continues to be improved for expansion. The team is currently incorporating mobile technology for survey participants to use their smartphones to verify their GPS data, and the long-term goal is to apply the prototype to larger scales of travel surveys. The findings allow for the improvement of transportation knowledge bases for major U.S. cities and other developed countries.

Recommendations: For major developed cities, this report recommends the use of the Web-based tool developed through the project research to keep up with the growing volume of GPS transportation data. The report also emphasizes the value of GPS systems significantly reducing the data collection issues of traditional travel surveys and the importance of verified travel information for regional transportation planners.
