Description: As the body of knowledge on transportation efficiency planning grows, it remains important to raise awareness of findings and promote further research. This report provides brief summaries of Vermont policies and planning documents at the local and state level, as well as interviews with practitioners and case studies of two relevant community measures.
Objectives: This report aims to inform researchers and practitioners of the current transportation efficiency planning policies and planning documents in place in Vermont. The report includes overviews of policies, general transportation planning and capital improvement documents, public transportation documents, rail documents, bike and pedestrian documents, energy-related documents, climate change documents, land use and smart growth documents, and links to Vermont data. The information compiled in the report serves as a foundation for further research, as it provides a background for researchers and may be used to identify gaps in research.
Findings: There is an emerging body of research on the state of the practice of transportation efficiency planning. The review of current literature represents the existing knowledge that has been applied and implemented in the state of Vermont. There are gaps that provide opportunities for more focused research into transportation efficiency planning, using previous findings as a foundation.
Recommendations: Additional research on transportation efficiency planning will benefit practitioners at state and local agencies alike. This document provides a framework for understanding the current state of the practice, and can serve to guide the direction of future research to areas of need.
