Description: Currently few small and mid-sized cities use analytical methods, such as spatial tools, to make policy decisions. The research presents the challenges that arise due to the collection of such data. This research also implements Geographic Information System (GIS) in order to allow the tool to analyze data regardless of the type of data.
Objectives: The research not only presents the challenges presented with the collection of spatial data for the purpose of analysis but also presents strategies to overcome such challenges as to inspire usage. The usage of spatial tools and GIS allows cities; especially those which do not currently use quantitative measures, to make informed decision that directly correlate to target measures.
Findings: The researchers found that the use of GIS systems and spatial data could identify new correlations between datasets. In addition to generating new data, existing databases can be improved through integration of spatial data. However, it is important to note that the collection of spatial data requires significant effort and coordination by policy-makers but results in better informed decisions.
Recommendations: While it is evident that the use of this tool and spatial data is beneficial in policy decisions, collecting data is the biggest challenge, especially for small and medium sized cities. The researchers found that through detailed guidance about instruments and spatial tools used. Additionally, the researchers recommend close compliance with performance targets and indicators to ensure quality data collection.
