Description: This planning guide addresses the data gap surrounding practices within freight systems. The research identified a set of initiatives (“mechanisms that the public sector can use to foster sustainable practices”) that provide examples of current practices in freight systems operating throughout metropolitan areas. These initiatives, as well as nine case studies, offer guidance for practitioners seeking to improve their freight system management strategies.
Objectives: The objective of this research was to inform freight system decision-making processes by providing examples of effective current practices. This report details conceptual components of the decision-making process, as well as examples of public sector initiatives categorized by topic, and case studies of freight systems in metropolitan communities.
Findings: The research team observed various effective strategies for freight system decision-making in practice at organizations nationwide. This report provides an overview of key freight management topics and contributes to an emerging body of knowledge on decision-making, providing guidance for practitioners.
Recommendations: As there is little existing knowledge available on freight system decision-making processes, practitioners can benefit from continued research and exploration of data gaps. Additionally, the guidance produced by this project can assist freight decision-makers as they develop their asset management strategies.
