Description: School siting significantly impacts transportation costs, both public and private, as students, families, and faculty pursue multimodal routes to school. Previous research developed a tool based on information collected from recently built schools in urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout North Carolina and Florida. The tool was used to estimate multimodal transportation costs at various school sites. This study employed the tool in order to produce new educational materials to assist decision-makers with school siting.

Objectives: The objective of this research was to produce resources that inform school siting stakeholders and decision-makers, so that they can make use of local transportation resources. The first objective was the development of an educational module based on the results of previous STRIDE research, which demonstrates the importance of school siting. The research team’s second objective was to disseminate tools and resources online, such as the School Transportation Cost Calculator that was developed as part of the previous STRIDE research. Additionally, the team conducted live and digital outreach efforts to present both the educational module and the School Transportation Cost Calculator.

Findings: City planning practitioners and educational faculty members have a mutual interest in school siting, and were brought together by the introduction of the educational module developed by this research. Both groups benefit from an understanding of the importance of school siting in relation to transportation costs, as awareness is currently low, and the study’s practitioner toolkit facilitates implementation of school siting knowledge. The research team’s outreach efforts extended access to their findings for many practitioners.

Recommendations: This research provides useful background information and tools for practitioners. The resources produced by the project can be used by graduate students and faculty to facilitate learning and research, while practitioners may use them to inform school siting decisions.
