Description: A super-commuter travels occasional long commutes in order to reach their workplace in a distant metropolitan area. A growing share of the workforce is made up of super-commuters. This report analyzes trends among super-commuters and their impact on major metropolitan environments across the country.

Objectives: The changing structure of the workforce nationwide impacts trends in travel behavior. This study observed trends in the nation’s ten largest metropolitan areas, and whether members of the workforce travel to their workplaces from outside of their Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs). The objective of this research is to inform practitioners of the trends in travel behavior that can impact the nation’s major metropolitan areas and their surrounding areas.

Findings: A major theme surrounding super-commuting is growth. Labor sheds are expanding, super-commutes are growing longer, and super-commuters generally occupy greater shares of the workforce. Travel behavior among members of the workforce is ever changing, and knowledge of that evolution can inform planning decisions at metropolitan planning organizations and other agencies in areas where super-commuting is common.

Recommendations: In order to make informed transportation planning decisions, it is important to consider the impacts of super-commuters on travel patterns in recent years, and how super-commuters may continue to cause changes for metropolitan areas. The findings of this study offer insight into the changing trends among commuters. This report provides valuable information to transportation planners seeking to account for patterns in travel behavior.
