Description: As a part of a series summarizing the discussions from the 9th International Conference on Transport Survey Methods, this book focuses on data collection as an asset for informing decisions. The book includes a broad range of international perspectives in order to discuss best practices for various communities. Discussions from the conference emphasized low cost survey strategies for the benefit of network users and planners alike.
Objectives: Given that data is critical to the decision-making process, lowering costs for users and planning agencies is reliant on a strong foundation of data acquired at an appropriate cost. The objective of this book is to report on the current state of the practice of data collection in many communities so as to develop best practices. This is accomplished through summaries of discussions between practitioners. Areas of focus for the workshop discussions include but are not limited to use of new technology and methods, improvement of survey interfaces, burdens on respondents, and new sources and needs for data.
Findings: This book summarizes best practices for travel behavior data collection, accumulating a diverse set of perspectives. The strategies, opportunities, and challenges discussed may inform practitioners seeking to improve their data collection process, and facilitate efficient and effective decision-making.
Recommendations: Practitioners should evaluate their data collection methodologies and consider the practices discussed in this book. The value of quality data for informed decision-making necessitates the use of best practices for data collection.
