Description: This study, conducted in Poland, observes the differences between intersections in urban communities and in rural communities. The study modeled and analyzed saturation flows within various design scenarios. This research focuses on traffic volume and geometric intersection design as factors in determining saturation flow at signalized intersections.
Objectives: The research investigated the impact of intersection design on user behavior and traffic patterns. The study observed intersection geometry and traffic organization, demand flow variation, and traffic signal settings and the factors used to determine them. The research team modeled saturation flows at the intersections studied, and observed the impacts on performance.
Findings: Congestion is difficult to prevent, and saturation flow is much lower at rural intersections. In order to facilitate smooth operation of all intersections, intersection design parameters must be considered to moderate saturation flow at various traffic volumes. This study contributes to the body of knowledge that informs classification of traffic and intersection characteristics.
Recommendations: Practitioners should develop a method for classifying states of congestion and marginal measures of traffic performance for their community. These standardized measures of traffic conditions will support planners’ responses to congestion and facilitate the development of traffic performance programming with a basis on local data.
