Description: The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Transportation Planning in Small and Medium-Sized Communities holds a biennial Tools of the Trade conference for disseminating cost effective tools and research needs among smaller communities. Following the 2014 conference, this article was published to highlight solutions that were presented.
Objectives: The purpose of the Tools of the Trade conference is to share best practices among peers so that findings from one community can serve several. This article highlights solutions presented at the conference as a summary of proceedings, offering an opportunity for attendees to further explore strategies presented, and allowing access to solutions for agencies that were unable to attend.
Findings: The article shares practices from smaller communities nationwide that address various challenges. Practitioners are employing analytical tools and new technology in particular to meet the needs of their communities. Topics included in the article are Using Aggregate Cell Phone Data, Applying Technology to Long-Range Planning, How DOTs and MPOs are Using TELUS, Improving Public Participation, and Using Employment Data By Industry to Generate Regional Models of Truck Trips.
Recommendations: This article presents solutions that may be useful to practitioners seeking transportation solutions within a small to medium-sized community. Exploring new strategies, tools, and technology used by one community can be beneficial when working to meet the needs of a similar community.
