Description: This report provides guidance for modeling practitioners, as advanced travel demand forecasting practices have emerged in recent years. The guidance in this report is consistent with the traditional four-step approach to urban area modeling, and also provides an overview of emerging modeling practices. This report outlines parameters and modeling techniques in line with the four-step approach, offering context for current modeling practices.

Objectives: The objective of this report is to inform modeling practitioners of current practices to apply to their planning processes. The report serves as a guide, and provides an overview of the document in the context of other modeling guides, applications of travel demand forecasting, data needs, model components, methods for model validation and reasonableness checking, emerging modeling practices, and case studies of implementation of the practices outlined.

Findings: This report documents successful strategies for practitioners to apply to their modeling processes for travel demand forecasting. The project contributed to the emerging body of knowledge and compiled useful information for practitioners.

Recommendations: For practitioners seeking to improve their travel demand modeling processes, this report can provide useful guidance. The report recommends collecting local data to validate modeling, and the data in the report can be used to supplement local data in validating and checking reasonableness.
